One of my most funny and fun moments in class was during the discussion of alternative methods for inducing labor. We had commented that sex is great because it increases moms’ oxytocin levels when she organisms and prostaglandins are introduced by dad’s semen that helps ripen the cervix. One dad asked straight faced – is that direct application or administered orally.
Speaking of great questions asked by dads, one dad asked during the last class in a portion I call “Stump the Chump” (where they can ask any question about labor, childbirth or going home) if he could wear his flip-flops during labor. Apparently there had been some discussion at home about his attire for birth and he wanted to know what was really acceptable.
My other favorite moment came at a childbirth reunion and this dad commented that when the provider asked if he would like to cut the cord, he asked the provider if he was going to take 5% off the bill. The provider said “No,” and the dad said “No Thanks.”
What is best about these moments is that it was dads who had questions and comments that are so important and so often overlooked. It tells me that even thought they may not want to look nervous or concerned, they are, and a childbirth class gives them the outlet to ask questions and get answers.
